Between your table and the water there is almost nothing. A railing, a few metres of quayside, then the river. A cargo ship drifts past, slowly, with that deep sound that you feel more in your stomach than in your ear. On the other side, the city is slowly growing dark and the lights are coming on.
There are evenings in May when the sun sets behind the crane houses and bathes the other bank of the Rhine in its final light until no one speaks anymore. And there are evenings in January when it is six degrees outside and you still sit outside because our terrace is covered, sheltered from the wind and heated. All year round. Really all year round.
